This question was a gift from Seth Pollock of Monterey State, many years ago at an Imagining America preconference session on values-engaged assessment. I use it as a way to expand the concept of vocation, to ask not only: what do you love? but why does your chosen field matter in a bigger sense? And from there we can ask: how are you inviting students, peers, partners into that sense of purpose? How are you helping them develop knowledges, skills, and values that will advance the public good your work can do?
